For God and Country

So I thought. Chin in palm I reflected. What was wrong? Could we right the wrong? It looks like the approach is always wronging ( is there such a word) the wrong.

You are wondering what I am writing about. I will get to the point. I know you are still reading. I will pose the questions. I will provide an answer. I want YOU to think and get on your feet.

Here we go. Soon it will be her birthday.  Is she in the mood to celebrate?  Why is she so sad and forlorn? Her dress in tatters.  A mother is toiling yet there is no fruit to show. Her children. The very young ones are so money conscious. Is it the oppulent lifestyle displayed by their senior brothers and sisters? Are good examples being set? With no sweat and toil, you can eat cake. Chandelier cake. It is ok to do so. After all Aunty Kakai did. Kakai means fearsome!!. It is ok. Manna still falls. Children become leaders and talk down on their elders. Did they suffer to enjoy such wealth? Go and ask those small boys who just throw their weight about ( charlie now dem put on weight papa. No longer fianga hungry boys)

59 years down the line, we cannot boast of decent trauma centers located around the country.  The doctors migrate like GYEEDA. Akonfem (guinea fowls) crossing the border. We cannot boast of ambulance services covering the length, nooks and crannies of the country.  We cannot boast of quality education (charlie graphic no dey force again koraa). We cannot boast of a decent policy in the interest of the nation. Is there nothing to boast about?(one Ayigbe expletive)

We can boast of visiting accident victims; descending from the sky like Superman in helicopters. We can boast of buying vehicles for journalists. We can boast of rebranding of buses. We can boast of wanton abuse of state resources for personal gain. We can boast of schools under trees ( if it rains no school). We can boast of road networks that are like obstacle courses. We can boast of lack of patriotism. We can boast of gross mismanagement. We can boast of eating Houphet Boigny chocolates. We can boast of shutting down our own Cocoa processing plants! (I am sure Tetteh Q wished he had taken the Cocoa beans to Malaysia)

In short we can boast of something. Nothing. ( one Ga expletive)

It is rather amazing for a country with a so called bad economy, the majority of the people manage to find time to engage in frolicking activities especially the consumption of Fire water (alcohol). I digress.

59 years. When I wrote the poem “Tears at 58”, some bashed me. I wrote the poem “The dayafter” hoping against logic that it would be well at 59. I have written “My birthday” to celebrate Ghana’s 59th Independence. There is the need to rejuvenate patriotism (big word) . There is the need to change our thinking. If we change our thinking, then our ways will change. If our ways change, I bet you Ghana at 60 will be beautiful .  Let us rewire our attitudinal thinking.

“God bless our homeland Ghana…..”
Let the words of the anthem mean something to you. Why do you lift aloft the flag? Would you rape your mother? Think of Ghana as your mother. She has given you a sweet identity. You are proud to be called Ghanaian ( see the smile on your face as you read this part). You have something unique. Let us join hands. Let us become one. We might be of different political alignments (I thought only cars had alignments) but we are all Ghanaians and I believe we all love our Country.

Let us be one! Mina mia wo deka! Ny3 ha ni wo f3 3komae! Moma y3 nye baako!

Say it if you cannot sing it. Each time we say or sing it, You and Iinvoke God’s blessings on our country Ghana.
“God bless our homeland Ghana..”

This piece is dedicated to Ghana’s unsung heroes ( both departed and living) and my Hon Gentlemen of M4.

  1. Articles like these challenge the conciousness of the individual and hopefully the citizenry. Question though is: DO WE READ AS A PEOPLE AND DO WE REACT POSITIVELY? Let’s hope there are some good under currents we are not noticing yet. For instance, we can sustain the relative peace the country Ghana is enjoying now. Thank you for lacing it with humour as usual. So at 59, we can smile, at least not at the wrong side of our mouths. Keep it up, more SilentNoises.
